Grade Teaching Assistance at MADU WALDORF Learning Centre Ubud

Madu Waldorf was founded in 2016. We are located on the outskirts of Ubud, Bali’s cultural and artistic centre. Ubud has become a hub for healing, spirituality, yoga, and the arts. It is home to the annual International Ubud Writer’s Festival and Ubud Food Festival. Ubud literally means “medicine”.

Our teachers are mainly local, and are trained in Waldorf pedagogy so that they may bring their own unique Balinese flavour to our school. Our mission is to bring Balinese culture and Anthroposphy (the philosophy of Rudolf Steiner) together. The Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana  strives to integrate our connection to nature, to society and to spirit.

Our instruction is given mainly in English, and partly in Indonesian. Children participate in all the local Hindu-Bali festivals such as Galungan and our Muslim and Christian teachers are encouraged to bring their festivals too.

We strive to give Waldorf education a distinctly local flavour. Children learn how to craft local materials such as palm-leaves, clay and bamboo, are served local food daily, learn local songs, games and rhymes.

Waldorf Education was founded by Rudolf Steiner in Germany in 1919 in response to the post-war need to refound society in a more balanced and harmonious way. The cultivation of pupils’ imagination and creativity in ways that serve their developmental needs is a strong focus. Qualitative assessments of student work are integrated into the daily life of the classroom, with quantitative testing playing a minimal role.

In kindergarten, we nurture a child’s development by facilitating creative, self-directed play, balanced with indoor activities such as baking, painting, story-time, songs and rhymes. Creative play awakens the initiative, imagination and flexibility needed later  for academic learning and innovative thought.

In primary school, the core approach is through artistic presentation of material by the class teacher which promotes engagement, inspires deep learning and supports developing imaginations.

The values underpinning our education are gratitude, responsibility, collaboration, inclusivity, diversity and initiative. These are drawn from spirituality, engender self-worth, enrich relationships and develop a deep appreciation of our place in this world.

Waldorf education has become the largest independent school movement in the world, with more than 1,200 independent schools and nearly 2,000 kindergartens located in 75 countries.

Indonesia has five Waldorf kindergartens (Bandung, Yogyakarta, Balikpapan and Ubud) and two schools (Bandung and Ubud).
